Stephen Nicholls

Horn
Adopted by Robin Bloxsidge and Nick Riddle

Stephen's musical journey commenced with the violin and singing in the St. FinBarre’s Cathedral Choir. At the age of 10, he embarked on horn lessons with Sean Clinch at the Cork School of Music.

In 2003, Stephen relocated to London to study under the guidance of Jeff Bryant, Hugh Seenan, and Richard Bissill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During his time there, he was honoured to be a member of the EUYO, touring across Europe and Kazakhstan, and performing in Cork as part of the European Capital of Culture celebrations.

Following the completion of his studies, Stephen was appointed as 2nd Horn with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He has also carved out a successful career as a sought after freelance player, playing as Guest Principal with many of Ireland and the UK’s leading orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert and Philharmonic Orchestras, and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra

In 2019, he assumed the role of Associate Principal Horn with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and recently was thrilled to be promoted to Principal Horn with the Irish Chamber Orchestra.

He is a member of the Liverpool Wind Collective, who perform regularly in the Music Room and around the local area.

Fun Fact:
Beyond his musical pursuits, Stephen is an avid runner, currently gearing up for his fourth marathon, and has a passion for mountain unicycling.
