Rebekah Abramski

Bassoon
Adopted by Bryan Lecky

Rebekah was born in Warrington into a musical home, where guitars and piano could be heard daily from both her parents. Having moved many times for her fathers work, the search for music teachers was always top of the priority list, and when she was offered bassoon lessons at school, she immediately fell in love with the sound and has never looked back since.

After attending Chethams School of Music for two years, she went on to complete her BMus at the Royal Northern College of Music with Ed Warren and Alan Pendlebury, both former principals of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. After this, Rebekah fulfilled a dream of studying abroad and completed a postgraduate degree in Stuttgart with Prof. Marc Engelhardt.

Auditioning in Germany during this time led her to her first two-year position in the Stuttgart Opera. After this she settled into life as Principal Contrabassoonist with the State Opera in Karlsruhe, where she played for eight years, prior to coming to Liverpool in 2011 as Principal Second Bassoon. Having the privilege of performing great music in our wonderful Hall and further afield is something Rebekah relishes as a member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, in addition to working alongside the Youth Company and sharing experiences with the next generation of musicians.

Outside of the Orchestra, Rebekah is an enthusiastic teacher of bassoon both privately and at the JRNCM in Manchester.

Fun Fact:
Rebekah speaks fluent German and always includes a selection of Plaetzchen in her Christmas baking for her colleagues.

Hometown:
I was born in Warrington and for various reasons have moved a lot. I've lived in London, Somerset, Manchester, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe but the longest I've lived anywhere is here. So I think I'd have to say Liverpool is now firmly my adopted home town.

Studied:
I studied in Manchester at the RNCM with two of the RLPO's former principal bassoonists, Ed Warren and Alan Pendlebury. I was also there at the same time as my colleague Gareth Twigg so this orchestra has been part of my life in various ways for about 25 years. My parents also had their first date here!

Joined the Orchestra:
I joined the orchestra at the beginning of the 2011/2012 season meaning I've now officially been a member for almost 10 years and there have been so many memorable concerts and tours along the way.

What tends to be your pre-concert routine and/or what happens post-concert?

Pre-concert I try to keep things fairly quiet and then get to the changing rooms before the crush as I like to be on stage early and I'm usually one of the last to finish packing away. Perhaps it's like setting up and clearing away a desk at the beginning and end of the day. Everything (reeds, water, music in order, bassoon stand) needs to be in its place ready to go.

Who has been your most influential teacher or mentor?

I have been fortunate to have had fantastic teachers both whilst studying and after starting to play full time and also many inspiring colleagues to learn from. I don't consider myself to have had one most influential mentor but I try to take the elements I most admire in all these people and continue to use them to inspire how I strive to improve both my musicianship and my approach to teaching my current batch of budding bassoonists!
