Principal Cor Anglais
Adopted by Mary Kennan
Drake Gritton became the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Cor Anglais in July 2023. Originally from London, Drake studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Jill Crowther, Jane Marshall and Patrick Flanaghan. He has also appeared as guest principal oboe and cor anglais with many leading orchestras, including the Philharmonia, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Drake recently played in the Philharmonie de Paris for the first time – a venue and an audience that really stayed with him. Since joining the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, a particular highlight has been taking on Shostakovich’s Symphony No.11 alongside Vasily Petrenko.
Fun Fact:
When he’s not on stage, Drake fills his spare time with cooking, photography, exercise, and (of course) making reeds. He also plays the piano and is an accomplished singer. If he hadn’t become a professional musician, Drake says he would have loved to be a wildlife photographer.
