Martin Richardson

First Violin
Adopted by Tim Jones in memory of Julia

Martin grew up in Bedfordshire and started learning the violin at the age of 10, becoming a member of the National Youth Orchestra from 1987-88. He went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Professor Yfrah Neaman where he led the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras.

Martin started his orchestral career as a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as no.5 First Violin in 1996. After a short career break to work as a clock restorer in the family business, Martin continued his position with the orchestra in 2000.

Fun Fact:
Martin has always been a keen athlete and competed in the AAA National Trials in 400m hurdles in 1988. He has been a member of the orchestra’s football and cricket teams and has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do . Had he not become a musician he would have pursued a career in meteorology!  Martin is married and has three sons (and two cats!)

What was your earliest musical experience?
Trying to play recorder at primary school - and failing. If you weren't a musician, what would you be?
Probably a premiership footballer with a long-term injury. Otherwise, work as an antique clock restorer in my father's business. I also wouldn't mind having a go at being Prime Minister eitherWhat is your most memorable moment with the Orchestra so far?
I have a very short memory, but probably having my photo taken on the Kop with the European Cup, while playing the violin in 2005! Also Shostakovich's 8th SymphonyWhat is your favourite Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra recording?
It has to be our Shostakovich CD, Symphonies 5 & 9. When I’m not listening to the Orchestra, I love Pink Floyd, Queen and other greats.
