Kate Richardson

Second Violin (Section Leader)
Adopted by Mrs Jean Bingham

Kate grew up in the Lune Valley in North Lancashire. She started learning the violin with her mother as did so many other children in the village including her brother and sisters. She remembers her mum making little violins out of powdered soap boxes – and practicing how to hold the instrument with a few chocolate-based games! Her Dad would often accompany them on the piano.

She went to Chetham’s School of Music, then continued her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) under the tutelage of Chris Rowland and Roger Raphael. Whilst there, Kate won various prizes for both solo performance and chamber music and performed as concerto soloist with the RNCM symphony orchestra.

Kate was a member of the Nossek String Quartet, performing regularly throughout the UK, Europe and further afield. They were Junior Fellows at the RNCM and Quartet in Residence at Bristol University. The Quartet performed in many prestigious venues including the Wigmore Hall, St John’s Smith Square & the Purcell Room as well as recording for BBC Radio 3.

Kate joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1999. She enjoys being involved with both the Orchestra’s Education, and Music & Health programmes. She is a member of Equilibrium, a quartet made up of members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra who are dedicated to performing works by previously neglected mainly female composers, and new works by exciting young composers.

Outside of work, Kate enjoys being outdoors and active. She likes running, walking, Pilates and yoga, and loves spending time with her family and friends.

Fun Fact:
If she weren’t a professional musician, she would have pursued a career in either teaching or journalism.
