Adopted by Yvonne Dempsey in memory of Michael
Gethyn grew up in the village of Trebanos, in the Swansea Valley, where he started to learn the cello via the local authority’s free music service and went on to become a member of the West Glamorgan Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Wales.
He studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the Royal Academy of Music before joining the Phil as sub-principal cello in 1984.
When not performing with the Orchestra, Gethyn spends much of his time working to help deliver the Liverpool Philharmonic’s extensive learning programme .
He was co-director/founder of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Academy Orchestra from 2014-2023 and frequently coaches the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra cellos. He was also presenter for “Discover the Classics”, which ran from 2015-2023.
Since 2020, Gethyn has been conductor/director of the University of Liverpool Symphony Orchestra.
Gethyn spends the rest of his time fueling his deep love of chamber music, as co- founder of the Ensemble of St. Luke’s and feeding his one-eyed passion for Welsh rugby!
