David Rimbault

Second Violin
Adopted by Margaret Metcalf In Memory of John

David joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 2010. Before that, he freelanced and toured regularly with many major orchestras across the UK.

David was born in Gloucester and after gaining a scholarship to study at Junior Guildhall went on to learn with Yair Kless at the RNCM. Whilst there David was the inaugural winner of the BBC Fame Academy Bursary and performed Mozart Violin concerto no 4 and Wieniawski Scherzo Tarantella live on BBC television.

David also enjoys teaching and many of his past students have gained places at major British music colleges.

Alongside his role as a violinist David has been Musicians’ Union Steward since 2018. Prior, he was chair of the players’ Committee during which time he was awarded the prestigious Salomon Prize by the ABO (Association of British Orchestras) and Royal Philharmonic Society, nominated by his colleagues. In citation he was described as being: an adept and enthusiastic navigator of modern orchestral life, and a passionate advocate for the Orchestra to be as fair, inclusive, progressive and enjoyable a place to work as possible.

Fun Fact:

David has two young children with his partner Lizzie, who also plays the violin in the Orchestra. He loves cooking, especially Sichuan food, is a season ticket holder at Spurs and has a passion for British and Irish farmhouse cheese.

What was your earliest musical memory?
Studying post-graduate violin...I have a very bad memory. My mother tells me a string quartet came to play at my school when I was 5 and I went home and asked for violin lessons. What is the best thing about being a member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra?
Getting to play alongside such lovely and talented people. The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the friendliest orchestras I have ever played with. I also love performing for the audience - hearing their appreciation at the end of a performance is so rewarding and not many other jobs have that type of satisfaction. What is your most memorable moment with the Orchestra so far?
Going on tour to China in October 2010, and tobogganing down the Great Wall! What is on your CD/MP3/Spotify playlist right now?
I really don't listen to music for pleasure! I own about 600 CDs but I don't listen to any of them unless I have a performance - to me music is work, and to relax I'd rather watch Neighbours or comedy or play some sport.
