Viola (Joint Section Leader)
Alex is a member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Northern Chamber Orchestra and Manchester Baroque. He also used to teach at the Royal Northern College of Music, and sometimes plays with Manchester Collective, Jess Gillam Ensemble and most of the orchestras in the north.
As a student he spent many years at the RNCM, where he was lucky enough to study with some great teachers, and won the concerto competition, the Paganini prize (on viola!) and was a member of the Zelkova string quartet. He also won 5th prize at the Tokyo Viola competition, and 3rd prize at the Beethoven International Viola Competition in Hradek.
In his free time, Alex spends lots of it in his garden and allotment, where he has a passion for growing and learning about fruit trees, and perennial vegetables. He has a dream of one day starting his own tree nursery.
"I’m so excited to be returning to the RLPO! The orchestra has always had a special place in my heart, my mums side of the family are from Liverpool, and some of my earliest musical experiences were when my grandparents would take me to see the orchestra when I was a kid. I am also a huge Beatles fan and supporter of Liverpool FC, I love the city so much."
Fun Fact:
Alex always wears odd socks!
