Former Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company musician, Hannah Mackenzie, joins the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as Principal Second Trumpet

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to announce the appointment of Hannah Mackenzie as Principal Second Trumpet. Her first performance in the role will be Thursday 30 November.

Hannah was raised on the Wirral and joined the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Company at 16 years old. The Youth Company is the largest community of young musicians in the North West created to develop young musical talent. During her time in Youth Company, Hannah won the Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist.

Hannah graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2016, where she studied for her Master’s Degree with Rhys Owens and Murray Greig. Prior to this she completed a Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and an undergraduate degree in Music at Lancaster University. Since graduating, Hannah has worked throughout the UK and abroad as a freelance musician and a regular concerto soloist. She is also a passionate educator, teaching in several schools across Merseyside. She has recently set up a thriving youth group, Wirral Youth Brass, alongside Simon Cowen who is the Principal Trombone of the orchestra.

On her appointment to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Hannah said: “The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra was the first orchestra I ever heard live as a young girl, so I am both thrilled and honoured to have been offered the Principal Second Trumpet chair in an orchestra that is cherished by so many. I’m looking forward to joining the brass section, the musicians in which (both past and present) I owe a great deal. They have provided invaluable guidance since graduating and I certainly wouldn’t be the musician I am today without them. The opportunities that I was given as part of the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra helped shape me into the musician I am today, allowing me to explore a diverse musical repertoire whilst building my confidence both on and off stage.”

It is wonderful to see the way in which the Liverpool Philharmonic has played a part in Hannah’s early musical development and now in her professional career. Hannah’s remarkable talent and passion for music is a wonderful addition to our ensemble, and we are confident that she will contribute to the extraordinary performances that our audiences have come to expect.”

The award-winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is the UK’s oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra. The origins of the Orchestra’s concert series date back to the formation of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic concert society by a group of Liverpool music lovers n 1840. Domingo Hindoyan became Chief Conductor of the Orchestra in 2021, joining a distinguished line of musicians who have led the Orchestra during its illustrious history. The Orchestra performs over 70 concerts each year in Liverpool and has long been a unique ambassador for the city through an extensive touring schedule throughout the UK and internationally, and through broadcasts and recordings.
