Sally Anne Anderson

Second Violin
Adopted by Mr and Mrs J P Monaghan

Sally Anne joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005 and combines playing in the Orchestra with being a lead musician for In Harmony Liverpool.

As a student at the Royal Academy of Music and a further year in Berlin, it was always clear to Sally Anne that performing and teaching were of equal importance so on being accepted into the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra she negotiated a job share position to enable her to explore music education whilst performing in the Orchestra

Sally Anne began her teaching career at the Royal Academy of Music’s First String Experience’ as well as being involved in a variety of the Liverpool Philharmonics’ learning and participation projects. In 2009 Liverpool Philharmonic launched In Harmony Liverpool at which point Sally Anne was seconded from the Orchestra to be the founding Artistic Director for this program

Specialising in group string teaching, Sally Anne currently teaches over 140 children each week. She is enthusiastic about developing ways for teaching a healthy technique to big groups of string players using the information she has gained from studying with Sophie Till. Sally Anne is a co-founder of the Till Project where she gives regular presentations based on her experiences of teaching with the Till Approach information. Sally Anne has created many resources to support her style of teaching including two series of books, ‘Tune Up!’ for instrumental learning and ‘Sticks & Blobs’ to develop musicianship.

Residential courses were a key part of Sally Anne’s musical upbringing, so she is delighted to be the musical director for Priory Farm Music Camp. Each year 90 young people from 8-17 participate in these camps which combine music of many genres with the great outdoors. Sally Anne is also a tutor for the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, for the Benedetti Foundation and a violin teacher at Chetham’s School of Music.

Sally Anne will always be grateful to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for introducing her to her contra-bassoon playing husband Bill!

Fun Fact:
Sally’s favourite team sport is Ultimate Frisbee.
