Vasily Petrenko conductor
The world of the theatre dominates in this concert, as Vasily Petrenko brings music from one of his signature composers (Shostakovich) and introduces us to a young contemporary of his beloved Mahler, Franz Schreker. Shostakovich’s thrilling score runs the gamut of styles and emotions as he mirrors the twists and turns of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. Schreker’s sumptuous and brilliant score to a theatrical pantomime based on a novella by Oscar Wilde marked him out as a potential successor to Mahler and Strauss. Subtitled an overture to a ballet, Hindemith’s piece was inspired by Rafael’s fresco in the Villa Farnesina in Rome.
The concert will be available to watch from 7pm on Tuesday 11 May, preceded by a live preconcert talk on Zoom at 7pm with BBC Radio 3 broadcaster and author Stephen Johnson, and a post-concert Zoom q and a session with musicians, conductors and staff in a sort of ‘post-match analysis’, where you can ask questions and participate. Further information on how to join the Zoom will be sent to you after you purchase a ticket.
