Nurturing talent, giving a platform to local artists – roles that the Music Room has embraced over the past decade. As part of our celebrations, we’re welcoming back some of our city’s most exciting young stars – artists who have all risen up through the Music Room, and have each headlined their own show in the space. Come along as Ellis Murphy, Astles, MT Jones and Motel Sundown perform as you’ve never seen them before.
A breath of fresh air, Ellis Murphy has amassed a cult following with his timeless brand of storytelling, through his songs that are both current and fresh but also reminiscent of a time when troubadours were the voice of a generation. A live performance from Ellis Murphy is not one to miss – with cutting edge, forthright lyrics that shine a veridical light on the modern world as well as Ellis’ own life and experiences.
Astles’ music colours misty melancholy in pastel seaside shades. Daniel Astles’ songwriting has piqued the interest of the NME (“gorgeous, lilting indie”), Clash Magazine (“he’s building a world inside his music – and it sounds gorgeous”) and even Sir Paul McCartney. The Astles Christmas shows have become part of local musical legend and Astles has supported the likes of Bill Ryder Jones, The Mysterines and Michael Head.
Gathering inspiration from soul greats across the Atlantic to modern R&B and jazz, MT Jones evokes a sound that transports you back to a smoke-filled speakeasy, while also feeling fresh and innovative. He has travelled the world as a session musician and influential singer songwriter, playing live for artists like Jalen and Louis Berry. He has broken out on his own musical journey and unique style, receiving strong support from BBC Introducing.
With a sound reminiscent of soft rock bands of the 60s and 70s, Motel Sundown draw listeners with their blend of heartfelt lyrics over luscious three-part harmonies. 2024 saw the release of their debut EP El Dorado, a series of sold-out shows, and festival appearances too. Labelled ‘a band to watch in 2024 and beyond’ (Fatea), the Liverpool-based group have also supported The Hanging Stars, The Chapin Sisters and Courtney Marie Andrews.
