The Music Room has always been a beloved home for folk music – and today we’re finishing our tour of Britain’s folk tradition by returning home to England. In two exciting shows, we’ll see female folk artists – both established stars and up-and-coming talent – come together on stage in inspiring showcases of the English folk genre, its history and its future too. This afternoon, we welcome Kathryn Williams and Sarah Smout.
Kathryn Williams is a Liverpool-born, Mercury Music Prize nominated singer-songwriter with 16 albums under her belt. With works spanning a range of styles and inspirations, every record Williams puts her name to burns with a meticulousness and an honesty that casts a spell all of her own making. Her last release, Night Drives, entered the official folk album charts straight at number 2. She has also authored an acclaimed novel, hosts the popular podcast “before the light goes out” and writes for diverse artists around the world. Williams is an artist that continues to listen and learn from the greats while, at the same time, undoubtedly becoming one herself.
Cellist, singer and poet Sarah Smout weaves together nature, creativity, and activism to provoke thought and inspire change. Her music has been played on BBC Radio 2, she’s worked with Greenpeace, COP26 and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, she’s been a session musician for artists such as Michael Chapman and Bridget St. John, and has appeared at countless festivals. Combining her unique use of live-looped cello soundscapes, ethereal vocals and soulful poetry, she creates a transportive and mesmerising world. Sarah’s music is shimmering with atmosphere, carrying the stories of people, places and beings whose voices need to be heard.
