Thursday 15 March 6.15pm (Music Room)
Classic Intro- Norman Lebrecht, one of the most widely-read commentators on music, culture and politics, regular presenter on BBC Radio 3 and author of Why Mahler?, returns to Liverpool to offer his insights into Mahler’s First Symphony.
“The symphony must be like the world” said Gustav Mahler. “It must embrace everything!” And in his First Symphony, he was as good as his word: it begins with the dawn of life itself, and ends by bringing the house down. It’s an epic journey, and no recording can ever do it justice. Performed live, under the inspirational Joshua Weilerstein, it’ll positively soar. Anna Tsybuleva, meanwhile – winner of the 2015 Leeds International Piano Competition – is a real poet of the piano. Schumann’s dreamy, deliriously romantic Piano Concerto could have been made for her.
