At the very centre of western music sits the viola – the instrument whose dusky tone somehow holds the sonic universe together. Viola virtuoso Lawrence Power is on a mission to expand that universe and he’s commissioned the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s Timothy Jackson to create something especially for him: a playful urban puzzle amid Luciano Berio’s electric dreams, Salonen’s neon folktunes and John Woolrich’s lyrical fusion of myth and the baroque. As ever, Ensemble 10/10 explodes preconceptions: and then pulls everything back into perfect harmony, with Tippett’s radiant Corelli Fantasia.
