‘My subject is War, and the pity of War’. Benjamin Britten composed his War Requiem using the poems of Wilfred Owen, who grew up in Birkenhead, fused with the traditional Latin texts. It has become one of the landmarks of modern music, a timeless and profoundly moving exploration of man’s inhumanity to man. Britten intended it as a gesture of reconciliation, and in that spirit, Andrew Manze has invited orchestral musicians and choristers from both Britain and Germany to join together for this evening’s special concert. Together with a world-class team of soloists, they’ll come together in the awe-inspiring space of Liverpool Cathedral to commemorate the moment, 100 years ago tomorrow, when the guns fell silent.

Please note there is no interval in this concert.
