Liverpool Arab Arts Festival

The Trace of the Butterfly

Liverpool Arab Arts Festival, in partnership with Marsm UK, presents a tribute concert for the much-loved Palestinian singer Rim Banna to celebrate resistance and victory through art.

Rim Banna passed away at the age of 51 in March 2018 in her home city of Nazareth after succumbing to breast cancer, a decade after she was diagnosed. She has been a pivotal and influential figure in the contemporary Palestinian music scene. She officially retired from live performances in 2016, but after she was told by doctors that she wouldn’t be able to sing anymore, Banna began working on her last album Voice of Resistance.

Voice of Resistanceis a brilliant conceptual album where Banna turns her medical files into backing sounds while she recites her poetry. According to her record label, she wanted the album to be a powerful statement in homage to her people’s struggle against all foes and woes, always with a sign of victory and a smile of hope.

Banna left an eclectic repertoire of 12 albums celebrating traditional and modern Palestinian and Arab music and poetry. In many ways, her art inspired her people's continuous struggle for peace and equality.

This concert brings together the people who knew her best, her closest peer musician/friends, to perform newly re-orchestrated versions of her songs live and celebrate her legacy in the presence of her fans. Each artist will perform a selection of Banna songs and will be accompanied by a specially assembled band.
