Vinny Peculiar, aka singer songwriter and poet Alan Wilkes, returns to showcase his highly acclaimed 2016 album Silver Meadows [Fables from the Institution] – a concept album set in a long stay Victorian 1980s psychiatric asylum. It’s a collection of musical character studies of lives lived and worked within the institution, combing the story telling panache of Ray Davies with the musicality of Eels.
The first set will feature Silver Meadows performed in full followed by a second set of songs from his extensive back catalogue, including works originally released by Parlour Flames (his collaboration with Bonehead from Oasis) and the songs formed in partnership with Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce and Craig Gannon of The Smiths. The album was inspired in part by Vinny’s work as a nurse and by his schizophrenic brother’s mistreatment in the mental health system. The show will feature a full band and multimedia installations, including authentic testimonies from the asylum. The reviews are striking…
‘Silver Meadows is an astonishingly powerful record, one of both musical and lyrical contrasts, and which captures with both humour and poignancy both the monotony and horror of being in a mental institution. It is an enthralling album and a remarkable achievement’ – Penny Black Music
‘A wonderfully strange, brave and captivating album’ – Daily Mirror
‘I'm sure Vinny appreciates those words that rate him as an undervalued national treasure, but I'm also sure he would be just as satisfied if a shedload more people would listen to some of these marvellously observed songs.’ – UNCUT Magazine
‘Poignant, sharply observed, such a beautiful collection of songs. If Ken Loach ever feels like doing a stage musical, this is his book’ – Mike Davies
