Poulenc: Sextet for Piano and Winds

It is common for a pianist to join string players in chamber works and composers have written some of their most inspired music for the various possible combinations. But it is less common to hear the piano with wind instruments even if the textures and colours which result are arguably more interesting. The sound of a violin and a viola can often be confused but a bassoon, a horn, a flute, a clarinet … they are utterly individual species.

Mozart was justly proud of his Quintet and it is one of those perfect pieces which seem to exist in one pure breath of inspiration. Poulenc had a number of goes at his Sextet, revising it and tinkering with it, but eventually he left us with one of his most characteristic masterpieces, full of his poignant combination of good humour and searing melancholy – always with a whiff of coffee and cigarettes somewhere in the air.

Seating is unreserved and doors open one hour prior to the performance start time.
