“Shame on you tyrants!” We couldn’t have a year of musical revolution without Shostakovich’s shattering symphonic retelling of the Bolshevik rising of October 1917. This is musical history on a blockbuster scale – and when Vasily Petrenko and the Orchestra recorded it, critics hailed the result as “superb”.

First, though, the remarkable Swiss virtuoso Teo Gheorghiu makes his Liverpool debut with a journey through romantic music’s dark underbelly, and Shostakovich’s friend Benjamin Britten puts to sea in four windswept extracts from Peter Grimes – the opera that revolutionised British music.
