Bernstein: On the Waterfront
Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue
Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 3
Juan Ortuno: conductor
William Bracken: piano
After last year’s sensational debut performance with Crosby Symphony Orchestra in Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, William Bracken, son of Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra cellists Ian and Hilary, returns in a performance of Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue. Beginning with that famous clarinet glissando, both jazz and classical themes are sure to collide with spectacular effect.
Bernstein would have been 100 this year, and the underrated suite from his only film score, On the Waterfront, starts proceedings. Speaking of anniversaries, Crosby Symphony Orchestra is 75 years old, starting life back in 1943, the same year that Sergei Rachmaninov died. His third symphony, full of Russian romanticism, will provide a suitable counterpoint to the indulgent American excesses preceding it.
