Emily Howard: Torus: Concerto for Orchestra (BBC Proms and Liverpool Philharmonic 175th Anniversary Commisssion)
Liszt/Schubert: Wanderer Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra
Shostakovich: Symphony No.12: The Year 1917
Vasily Petrenko: conductor
Teo Gheorghiu: piano
Petrograd, 1917: angry crowds fill the streets, the guns of a warship thunder in the distance, and the air buzzes with the songs of revolution. Shostakovich’s 12th symphony is all about history on a blockbuster scale – and when Vasily Petrenko and the Orchestra recorded it, critics hailed the result as “superb”.
Now, they play it together for the first time live in Liverpool: essential listening. First, though, the remarkable swiss pianist Teo Gheorghiu makes his Liverpool debut with a journey through romantic music’s dark underbelly - and the Wirral-born Emily Howard lights up the sky with her piece which will be given its world premiere at the BBC Proms 2016.
