Artist in Residence
Mark Simpson, clarinettist and composer
Mark Simpson was born here in the city and became a member of Merseyside (now Liverpool Philharmonic) Youth Orchestra. He was the first ever winner of both BBC Young Musician of the Year and BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year in 2006, and has gone on to appear with the world’s leading orchestras and write works that have “confirmed him as one of the UK's most exciting young talents” (The Guardian). We’re thrilled to announce that Mark is our Artist in Residence for the 2025/26 Season.
The Orchestra will be giving the UK premiere of his viola concerto Hold Your Heart in Your Teeth (25 September), then Mark takes to the stage in a Chamber concert featuring another of his original works, Geysir (14 January). We’ll also see his expansive oratorio The Immortal performed by the Orchestra and soloists (26 March), before Mark appears alongside Ensemble 10:10 (29 April) and performs in a very special solo recital (11 May).
