Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra is for young people aged 13-21 from in and around Liverpool.
Founded in 1951 as Merseyside Youth Orchestra, Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra enjoys a reputation for high quality performances and excellent opportunities for its players.
Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra rehearses on a project basis in evenings and weekends working towards a concert, and not a weekly schedule, with Artistic Director for Youth Ensembles, Simon Emery. The Youth Orchestra perform regularly at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and have recently toured across North of England.
Rehearsing during evenings and weekends, the Youth Orchestra performs each term at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, led by Artistic Director, Simon Emery and guest conductors including Domingo Hindoyan, Jessica Cottis and Andrew Manze. Young musicians have the chance to work with international guest artists such as Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and regularly work with and play alongside musicians from Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra alumni have gone on to study at top universities and music colleges, and play in the finest professional orchestras across the world, including Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Some members of Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra also play with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and attend leading music institutions, including Royal Northern College of Music and Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.
Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra is for young people aged 13-23, working at grade 7+ level on an orchestral instrument, and who want to enjoy playing with other talented young people from in and around Liverpool. Youth Orchestra is open to orchestral instruments: flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, harp, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
Annual fees are £180 to be part of Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra which can be paid in a lump sum or in instalments across the year. Youth Orchestra members are expected to attend any tours and courses in the year. Means tested bursaries are available to cover fees.
Membership of Youth Orchestra is by audition.
If you are interested in joining Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, please complete the below form. You will be contacted by a member of the Youth Company Team when further auditions are being scheduled. Auditions usually take place in May & June.
Auditions last approximately 10 minutes and will take place in central Liverpool.
In advance of an audition, you will be sent orchestral excerpts to learn. You should prepare these excerpts to the best of your ability, and you will be asked to play these at the audition. You will also be asked to perform 2 contrasting pieces of your choice which should demonstrate your skills and experience. This will give the panel an idea of how well you can learn and prepare music, and how your playing is developing.
The audition panel is made up of Simon Emery, Artistic Director for Youth Ensembles, and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra musicians.

Auditions will take place in May 2021 in central Liverpool. Video auditions are also available for those not able to audition in person. The deadline to apply for our 2021-22 season is Monday 3 May, 5pm.
