Digital Orchestra Lists
Your questions answered...
We’re making a change to the way we share our orchestra lists. This season, they will be available digitally on our website rather than printed sheets in the Hall.
This change will enable you to view the list before you arrive, during your visit and after the concert. It will also help make orchestra lists easier to access, allow us to make last-minute changes and reduce paper use.
The new digital page will also allow you to see everything about the musicians, artists and music all in one place. We will also add details about the encore here too.
We know that changing something familiar can raise questions, so we’ve answered some of the things you may be wondering about below.
Why are you moving to digital orchestra lists?
There are several reasons for the change. By having them online, orchestra lists are available to audiences before and after concerts, as well as during their visit, and can be updated more easily when changes are needed. This is now possible, due to our new website and the facilities it offers us.
Designing, printing and re-printing the orchestra lists takes up an enormous amount of time for our team. As a charity and arts organisation, we feel this time could be put to better use.
This also gives us the opportunity to add information about any encores performed at a concert, so you can look back and find out more.
We currently use around 700 sheets of paper per concert – which is at least 70,000 throughout the season. Moving online will help us reduce our use of paper and help us align with our environmental sustainability commitments.
What if I don’t have a smartphone?
No problem – you don’t need to have a smartphone to find out more about the concert.
Digital orchestra lists will be available on the digital screens in the foyer, so you can see the information without using your own device.
If you’d like a copy to keep, the orchestra list will also be available to print from our website before your visit.
What if I prefer a printed orchestra list?
We understand that some people prefer to have something physical to hold during a concert.
You’ll be able to print the orchestra list from our website before you come to the Hall. If you don’t have access to a printer, you may wish to ask a friend or family member to print one for you.
Will I have to use my phone during the concert?
No. You can also view the list before the concert begins or after it has finished, rather than needing to look at your phone during the performance.
Can I see the orchestra list before and after the concert?
Yes. One of the benefits of moving to digital orchestra lists is that you’ll be able to access them on our website before you arrive.
This means you can find out who is performing and see the orchestra line-up in advance, whether you’re at home or on your way to the concert.
Orchestra lists will remain available online after the concert, so you can look back at who performed even after you’ve left the Hall.
Will orchestra lists be available on the screens in the Hall?
Yes. Digital orchestra lists will be displayed on screens in the Hall, so audiences can access them without needing their own device.
What about Choir concerts? Will I still be able to see the lyrics?
Yes, lyrics will still be provided for concerts featuring our Choir. We know that they are an important part of the experience and we’ll continue to make them available in an appropriate format.
What if there's a last-minute change to the Orchestra?
Digital lists make it easier for us to update information when changes happen.
If there’s a last-minute change to the line-up, we can update the online orchestra list and the information displayed in the Hall, helping to ensure audiences have the most accurate information.
Will the digital orchestra list use a lot of data?
The orchestra list will be a simple, lightweight webpage, designed to load quickly and use minimal data.
You can also access it before coming to the Hall, when you’re connected to Wi-Fi or your home internet, if you prefer.
What if I don’t have internet access?
That’s fine – you'll be able to see the orchestra list on the screens in the Hall.
If you want to access it on your own device, you can also open the webpage before arriving and, where your device allows, save or print the information for use during your visit.
Will the website be easy to use?
Yes. The new website is being designed with accessibility and ease of use in mind.
The digital orchestra list will be simple to navigate, clearly presented and designed to work well on phones, tablets and computers.
Why not just carry on printing the lists?
Printed lists may seem small, but producing them for every concert uses paper, printing resources and staff time.
Moving to digital lists allows us to reduce unnecessary printing while making the information more accessible and easier to keep up to date.
Does this mean you’re becoming less welcoming to audiences who aren’t confident with technology?
Not at all.
We want everyone to feel welcome at our concerts, regardless of how confident they are with technology. That’s why orchestra lists will also be displayed on screens in the Hall, and printable versions will be available ahead of concerts.
Our aim is to give audiences more choice in how they access information, while reducing unnecessary paper use.
Will I have to scan a QR code?
Yes, there is a QR code available to you.
You can also access the orchestra list directly through our website, and it will also be displayed on screens in the Hall.
Will this save money?
The change will reduce the paper, printing and staff resources required to produce orchestra lists for every concert.
It also allows us to make better use of our new website and invest staff time in other aspects of delivering our concerts and supporting audiences.
Will this affect the quality of my concert experience?
We don’t expect it to. In fact, we hope the change will make orchestra information more convenient to access.
You’ll be able to see the list before, during or after your visit, while those who prefer not to use a phone can view it on the screens in the Hall or print a copy in advance.
I really like collecting orchestra lists. What can I do?
We understand that some audiences enjoy keeping concert information as a memento.
Printable versions of orchestra lists will be available through our website, so you can print and keep a copy if you wish.
What if I have accessibility requirements?
We want our digital information to be accessible to as many people as possible. The new orchestra list will be easy to read and designed to work across different devices.
If you have a specific accessibility requirement or need help accessing the information, please speak to a member of our Front of House team.
