About The Train To Rome

A night of pure celebration, a night about when an incredible band of supporters turned Rome and the eternal city “LIVERPOOL RED”.

Of course, with Liverpool the Fans are always there, but in Rome in 1977 they were like a huge RED ARMY. A Red Army willing to get there by hook or by crook; and the way often talked about the most was “The Rattlers” the trains that left Lime St and went on a journey that became legendary.

The Liverpool team of 77, on getting to the hotel in Rome, commented on how “the Scousers were absolutely everywhere” while Captain, Emlyn Hughes, laughed and joked and played cards to calm his teammates in preparation for the most important game in Liverpool’s history.

Our night at the Philharmonic is “A Fans night”, a night about how “The Liverpool way” was written in folklore and stamped as the way to win in Europe. A man we pay tribute on the night, Ian Callaghan was quoted before the game: ‘Yes, Monchengladbach were good, we had respect for them, but they were more worried about us than we were about them.’

It was said that pre-game, while in their dressing room, the Monchengladbach players could hear the pulsating, echoing noise of the Liverpool crowd. They knew the red-and-white legions would be difficult to silence; and the Liverpool players knew it too. Monchengladbach had heard how a Liverpool crowd could change a game, as they had in a two-legged UEFA Cup final in 1973. Once the players entered the pitch to an ocean of red-and-white chequered flags the result was a given, and with a 3-1 win and “Old Big Ears” finally in the bag, the party started in earnest.

So… on a night of pure nostalgia at the historic Philharmonic Hall we celebrate Liverpool’s 1st European Cup win, as the supporters and players who were there speak about what it was like on the days and nights that they helped turn the eternal city of Rome pure RED & WHITE. Stories of the train journey, the flags, the goals and of how The Reds won their first European Cup are what this night is all about. With Phil Thompson, Jimmy Case, Davy Fairclough and Ian Callaghan and the Supporters - be there - as we celebrate the fans journey to Rome on this the 50th anniversary of Liverpool FC’s Greatest ever night.
