Thomas Lang returns to Music Room to showcase the 30th anniversary reissue of his acclaimed debut album Scallywag Jaz.

On release, his honeyed tenor tones drew comparisons, with the smooth, sultry jazz-drenched moods of Sade and the warmth and expressive inflections of Alison Moyet - for sure, Lang has a big, classy voice.

Scallywag Jaz presents music that is a moody, melancholic mélange, featuring saxophones and pianos. The songs swing towards a hazy nostalgia for half-empty ’50s dancehalls and ballrooms. The original album was written with, and co-produced by, one of the leading Merseyside musicians of the day, David A. Hughes and co-produced with Pete Smith, whose stellar record production credits now include such luminaries as Sting, Gary Moore, The Adventures, Squeeze and Randy Crawford.

The album amply demonstrates Thomas and his cohorts’ diverse musical stylings in songs that range from the jazzy instrumentation of the title track through the torch vocals of ‘Fingers & Thumbs’, ‘Injury’ and ‘Spirit’, to an invigorating and surprisingly spirited interpretation of the classic ‘Me & Mrs Jones’.

This 30th anniversary deluxe edition of the 1987 album contains no fewer than 26 bonus tracks, including variant versions, demos and live versions of key album tracks. A special inclusion are two all-new songs - ‘Scared’ and ‘I Believe’, that confirm Lang’s ongoing power as a foremost song stylist.

Please note, this is a standing show.

Thomas Lang has the sort of voice that fascinates all on its own: a succulent, tremulous, smoke-blue tenor that hangs in the air, looking for an excuse to soar or dive.
