Mists swirl, a ghostly waltz echoes in the distance – and Ravel’s La Valse launches an evening-long voyage through a haunted century.
You may already know Rachmaninov’s most romantic piano concerto, often described as the best piano concerto ever written, and when you hear pianist Alexandre Tharaud’s recent disc with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, out in October, you’ll know to expect far more than just a brief encounter tonight!
Then we join two Russians in America: Stravinsky jazzing it up, Rachmaninov looking back over a long life in his sumptuous Symphonic Dances – joys, regrets, and melodies to die for. Vasily Petrenko feels this music in his soul.
