"You have never seen me sad; let it not happen now, on parting…” Schubert’s Schwanengesang collects the last thoughts of one of music’s noblest spirits. Tender, heartfelt and profound, it’s a whole music-drama in miniature. And you’ll never hear it sung with more understanding or love than by two of the world’s greatest living interpreters of lieder: Roderick Williams and the incomparable Iain Burnside. The evening opens with the first ever song cycle by a major composer, Beethoven's 'To the Distant Beloved'.

Williams perfectly captured the balance between anger and irony, bittersweet recollection and despair, and made every word, every syllable, matter.
