One Man's Story is a musical theatre production telling the life story of ‘Bongo’ Eddie Folk, the percussionist of international 80’s and 90’s chart-topping American musical band Kid Creole and the Coconuts for over 30 years. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Bongo, a unique larger than life character, had made his home in Liverpool for over a decade before finding love and sadly passing away after a short battle with cancer in 2016.
A new, vibrant and innovative production that depicts the twists and turns of Bongo's transatlantic life through rhythm, dance, music, film and prose. It’s time to celebrate with friends and family as you sing-a-long to an incredible array of live music, celebrating the exciting era of funk, disco and latin sounds loved by so many. Join this exciting journey as you're immersed in the ever-unfolding life and love story that travels across the pond, from Brooklyn to Liverpool.
One Man’s Story is performed by an all-star cast, including Liverpool’s own Simon Lennon (BBC's Our Girl) and Mark Anthony Jones (Kid Creole & the Coconuts), who has also worked with Prince, Janet Jackson and Donna Summer, all accompanied by a spectacular live band.
Directed by the award-winning Jen Heyes, the production has been described as ‘Stomp meets Blood Brothers meets Ghost the Musical’. A tale of adversity, ambition, chart-topping fame and love; a love story that has continued beyond this earth.
I love you from beyond this earth, my heart and soul are waiting there
One Man's Story is a fundraising collaborative work between ConYoBongo and Genie In The Gutter, a local arts for social change charity that Bongo Eddie was a Patron of, who are celebrating their 10th year anniversary of supporting some of Liverpool’s most marginalised citizens. Following losing 90% of its core funding in 2016, Genie In The Gutter aims to raise funds with this production so that its doors can remain open to continue to support those who need it for years to come.
The show has been written by Genie In The Gutter’s Carolyn Edwards, Bongo Eddie’s partner during his later years, and it also charts their love story, her harrowing grief, and the creative awakening she has experienced since his passing.
Set up in memory of Bongo Eddie and blending multiple artistic genres, such as contemporary dance, yoga and bongo drums, ConYoBongo also blends artists from varying artistic/social backgrounds and has aims of producing high calibre professional musical theatre shows. ConYoBongo aspires to combine the real with the virtual and grass roots, emerging and professional high profile artists to co-create innovative live integrated theatre and memorable audience experiences that are fully inclusive and accessible for all.
