Guitar Concerto No.1
Symphony No.1
Vasily Petrenko

When the young William Walton unleashed his First Symphony on an unsuspecting public, it was like a volcano had suddenly erupted amidst the peaceful countryside of English music. Fiery, furious and driven by emotions, it’s an electrifying experience: just imagine what Vasily Petrenko will do with it! Two altogether gentler inter-war gems set the scene: Respighi’s magical toybox of a ballet, and the Italian Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s dreamy Guitar Concerto – inspired by the sunlit hills of Tuscany, played tonight by one of the world’s leading classical guitarists.
