In Russia, the return of spring feels like falling in love. In France, it’s a bit more subtle – but just as beautiful.

True, it’s still November in Liverpool, but tonight Vasily Petrenko has it both ways, whether in Rachmaninov’s impassioned forgotten choral masterpiece, or Debussy’s blossoming celebration of new life.

Add the wood smoke and memories of Elgar’s nostalgic, hugely popular Cello Concerto, played by the charismatic Kian Soltani, and the sheer drama of Borodin’s rollicking mini-epic of a Russian symphony, and this is a concert for all seasons.
