Liverpool Philharmonic in Residence: Barrow

Since 2024, we’ve been collaborating with local partners to perform a series of concerts and workshops in Barrow-in-Furness, bringing all that we do to the town’s wonderful communities. And we’re back again this year with even more incredible musical experiences.

Working with schools and local organisations including The Forum, BarrowFull, Cumbria Music Education Hub, North West Music Academy and Westmorland & Furness Council, and with the support of Arts Council England, we’ll be bringing something for everyone, whether you’re a classical music fan or this is your first time hearing an orchestra.

Saturday 26 September | 10.30am – 5pm | Town Hall

Come and Sing

Back by popular demand, Come and Sing returns to Barrow, bringing voices together for a fun, relaxed and friendly singing workshop. Led by two of Liverpool Philharmonic's choral directors, you’ll be working on iconic choral classics such as Mozart’s Ave Verum and extracts from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. So come along for a day filled with incredible music and community.

Pops Goes Classical

An evening of iconic pop hits transformed through the sound of the Orchestra and performed by candlelight in the stunning surroundings of the Town Hall. Featuring music by Queen, Coldplay, Adele and Celine Dion, this special concert blends soaring melodies and timeless songs in an intimate live experience presented by Cumbria’s own Patsy Gillam alongside Juliette Pochin. Friday 30 October | 19:00 | Town Hall

Bolt’s War

An evening of music inspired by remembrance, resilience and hope, centred on the remarkable story of local composer and music director Alan Bolt. While held as a prisoner of war during WWII, Bolt formed an orchestra in the camp and composed Festival Overture. Liberated before it could be performed, this concert finally presents the work’s world premiere alongside music by Vaughan Williams, Butterworth, Carwithen and Ravel.

Beethoven in Barrow

Chief Conductor Domingo Hindoyan brings our Beethoven Celebrations to Barrow with a concert that’s bold, vibrant and buzzing with life to mark 200 years since the composer’s death. A musical ode to a 16th-century freedom fighter, the shifting moods in Beethoven’s Egmont Overture portray the grappling forces of good and evil before Symphony No.7 provides the perfect finale with its driving pulse, joyous mood and deeply moving second movement.

Dementia Friendly Concert | An Invitation to Dance

Join presenter Claire Henry and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra musicians for a concert inspired by dance. This performance has been designed to be informal, engaging and enjoyable for people living with dementia, along with their friends, family and carers. The concerts will last for approximately 1 hour and take place in Barrow Library, which is fully accessible.

Under 5s Concert | Prehistoric Party

We’re heading back through the musical mists of time to meet everyone’s favourite prehistoric pals… Together with presenter Claire Henry and musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, we’ll discover the dinosaurs that walked the Earth millions of years ago – and there’ll be lots of roarsome musical fun along the way! These concerts will last for approximately 1 hour and take place in Barrow Library, which is fully accessible.

Reinventing Britten

Childhood and lullabies weave through this concert, which puts the spotlight on Benjamin Britten to mark the 50th anniversary of his death. Britten composed themes for his Simple Symphony as a child, while A Charm of Lullabies reimagines texts by Blake and Burns. Timothy Jackson presents a gentle hymn of comfort, and two works by Grammy Award-winning composer Caroline Shaw offer a psychedelic take on fairytales and nature.
