Vasily Petrenko became the Phil’s Conductor Laureate in 2021, having been the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor since 2009. He’s also the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Music Director and Chief Conductor of the European Union Youth Orchestra. He’s recorded many award-winning albums with the Phil and, during his time in Liverpool, he won both Gramophone and Classical Brit Awards. 

Vasily also made a real impact on the city – he was made an official Citizen of Honour and he received honorary doctorates from both the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University, plus an honorary fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University.
