Our Music City & Its Future

The Phil has been part of Liverpool’s musical story for a very long time now – but we’re super excited about its next few chapters… 

We’re always working to help keep this city’s sound and creativity at the cutting edge, nurturing new talent and providing all the opportunity we can. 

And it goes beyond music. We’ll be forever grateful for the support we receive from our communities every single day, and we’re proud to play our part in helping Liverpool and its residents thrive.

New Sounds

With over 300 new works premiered and commissioned in the last two decades, we’re one of the most active orchestras in the UK when it comes to supporting new music. We always strive to bring emerging talent to Liverpool, building relationships with young composers and musicians right from the start. 

And even better if they’re local too. We’ve been honoured to support Liverpool artists like Nneka Cummins and Mark Simpson as their careers go from strength to strength.

Then there’s the Music Room. A vital part of Liverpool’s music scene, it’s a grassroots venue unlike any other. Over the years, the Music Room has hosted so many up-and-coming stars of every genre imaginable. Acoustically unmatched, with a programme that’s as diverse as our city itself, it’s the perfect spot to let new talent shine. 

What Comes Next

In the past, music industry facilities and talent development opportunities have always been easier to find in London and the South East than here in our city and across the North. 

But that needs to change.

That’s why, alongside music colleagues from across Liverpool, we’re helping talented artists thrive and build their career here in their home city. Here’s how we’re doing it…

With the support of Liverpool City Region’s Music Board, we’re inspiring more entrepreneurs to move to Liverpool to benefit from the unique music brand and opportunities we’re building for the future.

Alongside our friends at the University of Liverpool’s Music Futures UK, we’re providing support to the next generation of promoters, championing new voices and underrepresented talent.

We’re working with local music industry success stories like Sentric Publishing and Ad Lib, plus other national music industry bodies, to run our region’s largest music industry careers fest.

And we’re partnering with Liverpool City Council and City Region to create once-in-a-lifetime events, where our Orchestra, venue and musicians bring a whole new dimension to showcasing our city.

Come On In

Music belongs to everybody. And that’s why we established Leap! Into Live Music. It’s our free and discounted ticket scheme for audiences who’ve never experienced live music at the Phil before, and might not be in a position to be able to do so.
