Liverpool Phil Timeline
We have created a timeline of important dates within the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic's history since 1840 to the present day.
Here are some of the key dates:
1840 Foundation of Liverpool Philharmonic Society created on 10 January
1844 Society commissions John Cunningham to design a concert hall on Hope Street
1933 Philharmonic Hall destroyed by fire on 5 July
1939 The new Philharmonic Hall, designed by Herbert J. Rowse, opens on 19 June
1957 Granting of Royal status to the Society and Orchestra
1966 RLPO makes its first overseas tour, to Germany and Switzerland
1988 Granting of Royal status to the Choir
1995 Refurbishment of Philharmonic Hall completed
