John Aasgaard

 

Jonathan is the Cello Section Leader in the Orchestra and joined the Phil in 1999.




Q. How long have you been with the RLPO?
A. Since 1999

Q. What was your earliest musical experience?
A. Probably my father serenading me with Monteverdi on his sackbut (a brass instrument & an ancestor of the modern trombone) or Thelonious Monk on the piano while still in the womb

Q. Do you play any other instruments?
A. Not really

Q. If you could play a different instrument, which one would it be?
A. Piano

Q. What would you most like to do if you weren’t a musician?
A. Novelist

Q. If you could take a recording of one piece of music to a desert island, what would it be?
A. Maybe Bach's Goldberg Variations... or Brahms C minor piano quartet

Q. Which piece of music do you most enjoy playing?
A. Dvorak's Cello Concerto

Q. Which personality (historical, musical or otherwise – living or dead!) would you most like to share a bottle of wine with?
A. Rostropovitch

Q. Where’s your favourite place to eat/drink in Liverpool?
A. To eat: a little restaraunt on Aigburth Road called Paul's place.  To drink: Penny Lane Tavern

Q. What do you do to relax in your free time?
A. Watch a film and/or share a bottle of red with my wife Georgina

Q. Where’s your favourite holiday destination?
A. My in laws' farm in Normandy
