Classic FM

In November 2001, the Liverpool Phil was the first UK orchestra to enter into a ground-breaking partnership with Classic FM, the UK’s leading classical music radio station which saw it adopted as the station’s ‘Orchestra in North West England.’

Originally established for three years, the partnership has been extended to 2009 and continues to raise the profile of the Orchestra in Liverpool, regionally and throughout the UK.

The original partnership was borne out of a shared desire to build new audiences for classical music. Together Classic FM and the Liverpool Phil have launched a series of groundbreaking projects, which have encouraged people to enjoy live music-making at Philharmonic Hall, many for the first time.

Classic FM listenership has increased by over 18% in the North West since the partnership was announced in 2001, providing a significant potential audience for the Phil.

In a unique piece of market research, commissioned by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic in 2005, and the biggest survey of its kind undertaken by a UK orchestra, the partnership was identified as a major factor in encouraging people to try live classical music. 88% of those questioned had heard a Liverpool Phil feature on Classic FM and 23% had booked tickets for concerts as a result.

Classic FM has worked in partnership with the Phil on a number of audience development initiatives, including Test Drive Classical Music, in association with the Liverpool Echo. The initiative offers listeners and readers the chance to attend a concert at Philharmonic Hall for the first time for free.

The Classic FM Series at Philharmonic Hall features popular and accessible music from the repertoire, while concert recordings features regularly on the Classic FM play list.

The Phil benefits from editorial support in Classic FM Magazine and on Classic FM’s thriving website, which has also provided opportunities to drive ticket sales.  Visit Classic FM's website.
