The singer, songwriter and guitarist began his career in folk music, performing at a free benefit concert with Pete Seeger. Over the last 40 years his songs have been performed by artists as diverse as Fred Astaire, Weird Al Yankovic, Elvis Presley, Josh Groban, George Michael and Madonna.
He is probably best known for his hit album American Pie which he dedicated to Buddy Holly on its release 40 years ago. The classic album spawned the number one singles American Pie and Vincent.
