Liverpool Philharmonic Announces Virgin Trains as Travel Partner
The new deal, which extends to Spring 2012, cements a partnership approach to working together, begun in 2008, when Virgin Trains began providing travel assistance for Liverpool Philharmonic's Learning activities. Most recently, the company’s support helped transport 100 children and their families from West Everton, who are participating in the In Harmony Liverpool commnity development project, to London's South Bank Centre to see the internationally acclaimed Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. The ensemble has emerged through Venezuela's El Sistema, the inspirational model on which In Harmony in West Everton is based.
Key elements of the partnership will include:
- Accreditation of Virgin Trains as the official Travel Partner of Liverpool Philharmonic on-line at www.liverpoolphil.com and in all marketing literature including season brochures and concert programmes for concerts in Liverpool and literature associated with national and international touring.
- Mutually beneficial special offers and value added promotions to Liverpool Philharmonic and Virgin Trains’ customers.
- A comprehensive tickets package and additional ticket incentive schemes for concerts by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and other events at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall for use by Virgin Trains for customers and staff.
Arthur Leathley, Communications Director at Virgin Trains said: "As sponsors of European Capital of Culture in 2008 we are well aware of Liverpool’s rich cultural attractions. Liverpool Philharmonic is setting the pace, both through it orchestral programme and its In Harmony project. We are pleased to support this example of excellence.”
Millicent Jones, Executive Director of Liverpool Philharmonic added: “Virgin Trains has an important role in the City as a travel provider and also as an ambassador for its cultural offer, bringing many thousands of visitors here to experience it. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Virgin Trains to provide opportunities for the company’s staff and customers to enjoy the great music of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra here in Liverpool.”
Notes to Editors
Virgin Trains
Virgin Trains has provided service between London and Liverpool since 1997. Departing hourly, the typical journey time is just 2h 8m on a state-of-the-art tilting train. Importantly for a major tourist destination like Liverpool, the timetable on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons broadly mirrors the weekday timetable.
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
From its foundation by a group of Liverpool music lovers in 1840 to the present day, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the UK’s oldest surviving professional symphony orchestra, has always been at the heart of the city’s cultural life. Today, Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko is following in the footsteps of a distinguished line of conductors who have led the internationally-renowned Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra throughout its history. Together, they are attracting plaudits and awards for their concerts and recordings.
Liverpool Philharmonic also includes the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir, Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and Choir, contemporary music group Ensemble 10/10, chamber music and an extensive learning programme, including spearheading the acclaimed In Harmony community development programme in the North West, one of three pilot programmes in the UK, funded over three years by the Department for Education.
The Grade 2-listed Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, opened in 1939 and designed by Liverpool architect Herbert Rowse, is the home of the Liverpool Philharmonic, and presents an international programme of music, comedy and film.
