Three new works which explore different aspects of dance, theatre and film.

Liverpool-born composer Emily Howard (b.1979) is a rising star in the British new music scene. Her music has been described as ‘relishing orchestral colour in the way the best contemporary Nordic composers do, with ear-catching harmonies commuting between the granitic and the silvery‘.

Born in Cork in 1974 and now based in the South Pennines, Ailís Ní Ríain is one of Ireland's most exciting young composers. A published playwright as well as prizewinning composer, she has written and directed many music- theatre pieces.

On this commission, she writes: ‘Catapulting me from juncture to juncture, my mind was racing with the possibilities in this language, not just music this time, something else, something that allows me to say more, say something specific, say something straight. To simply say something in sound. My new commission for Ensemble 10/10 will concern itself with the theatre of the mind.‘

The music of Merseyside composer Gary Carpenterdazzles with its pungent pithiness’ (The Times); his Azaleas for harp trio was the winner of the chamber music category at the 2006 British Composer Awards. He has composed more than ten music-theatre works.
