Kate Marsden - Violin
Q. What is your instrument/ position/ job title in the Orchestra?
A. I am a member of the Second Violin Section.
Q. When did you join the Orchestra?
A. In June 2006.
Q. What was your earliest musical experience?
A. My dad is a pianist and music teacher so I suppose from the womb I was exposed to lots of music and piano playing. I think I even went to hear Weather Report in concert, though only half of it as my mother worried about the effect of the volume level on her unborn!
Q. If you could play a different instrument, which one would it be?
A. Guitar? Voice? Piano? Guitar? Voice? Piano? No, I just can't decide!
Q. What would you most like to do if you weren’t a musician?
A. Certainly something that would give me my weekends back! Perhaps working with children... dare I say it... teach. The other option of course is to become an astronaut, that was always my childhood desire - though I'd need to look in to how that might affect my weekends!
Q. What’s on your record/CD/MP3 Player/Spotify Playlist right now?
A. Right now my CD player contains a disc of Terra Folk - an eastern European gypsy band. I just love it and it puts me in a great mood. Spotify at the moment is clogged up with lots of early choral music... I have yet to work out how to use my MP3 player. I'm bad with technology.
Q. What is your favourite Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra recording?
A. I think Shostakovich's 5th Symphony.
Q. What is your most memorable moment with the Orchestra so far?
A. Our trip to Prague was a big highlight for me. Beautiful city. Lovely music and happy faces on the whole.
Q. What do you like to do with your free time outside music?
A. Free time is???? He he he! I like to convince myself that I am into sports and so occasionally endeavour to go for a jog or play football or swim. It works better some weeks than others. When we can find time, my fiance and I enjoy walks in the Lakes or North Wales or anywhere out in the countryside. Being with friends and people makes me happy so meals out or long chats in pubs are great.
Q. What do you like most about Liverpool?
A. It is very down to earth with little room for pretense. Mostly, the people I meet are incredibly friendly, always up for a bit of funny banter and have great stories about the history and changes that have taken place in Liverpool. It also boasts amazing architecture to rival many other cities in Europe - though perhaps not Prague!
