Chief Conductor, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

Vasily Petrenko was appointed Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2006; in September 2009 he became Chief Conductor.

He is Chief Conductor  of the Oslo Symphony taking up the baton in the 2013/14 season. In July 2012, he was announced as Principal Guest Conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre (formerly the Mussorgsky Memorial Theatre) in St. Petersburg, Russia, Petrenko’s native city and where his professional career began in the mid-1990s.

Petrenko has made guest appearances with major orchestras throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. He has toured with the European Union Youth Orchestra and made his BBC Proms debut with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008, returning with Liverpool Philharmonic for the 2010, 2012 and 2014 Proms seasons. His wide operatic repertoire includes Macbeth (Glyndebourne Festival Opera) Le Villi, I due Foscari and Boris Godunov (Netherlands Reisopera), Pique Dame (Hamburg State Opera), Eugene Onegin (Opéra de Paris, Bastille) and Parsifal (Xacebeo Festival, Santiago de Compostela).

Recordings with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra include Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony (2009 Classic FM/Gramophone Orchestral Recording of the Year); the world premiere performance of Sir John Tavener’s Requiem; and Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3 and Nos. 1 and 4 with pianist Simon Trpčeski; and Symphony No. 3. The recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, one of 7 discs in an ongoing Shostakovich symphony cycle, was the 2011 Gramophone Awards Orchestral Recording of the Year.

Vasily Petrenko is the German Echo Klassik Awards 2012 Newcomer of the Year for the recording of Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 3 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (EMI Classics). For his outstanding contribution to Liverpool and the arts, he has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Liverpool, Liverpool Hope University and Liverpool John Moores University. He was the Classical BRIT Awards Male Artist of the Year 2010 and the Classic FM/Gramophone Awards Young Artist of the Year 2007.
