Nicholas Cox basset clarinet
RLPO Principal Clarinet Nicholas Cox, one of the orchestra's finest soloists, performs Mozart's evergreen clarinet works with the RLPO.
Nicholas plays on the basset clarinet, the instrument for which Mozart originally wrote these works, and which extends a further octave lower in pitch than the modern conventional clarinet.
A note from Nicholas Cox:
"I first performed the Mozart Concerto on the basset in January 1997, having since played the Concerto on this instrument a further dozen or so times with various orchestras, and the Quintet several times with the Endellion Quartet, the Camerata Ensemble and with colleagues from the RLPO - every occasion being a joy and privilege."
"Nicholas Cox's blend of mellifluous tone and effortless technique are a joy to the ear. It is very revealing to hear these works in their original configuration, many of the transposed lines now being restored to their earlier elegant state."
