Petr Altrichter
conductor
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

Petr Altrichter chose for this album three dramatic, colourful and passionate works from the early twentieth century.

Respighi’s rarely-recorded suite of tone poems Church Windows was inspired by his lifelong love of Gregorian melodies. Kodály’s Dances of Galanta brilliantly weaves folk melodies and dances into a delicate but highly energetic tapestry, which has become notorious among musicians for its many technical challenges. Janácek’s Taras Bulba is surely one of the greatest orchestral works of the period, the musical narrative leaving no detail untouched in its vivid description of the Cossack warlord and his fate.

All three performances area suitable testament to Petr Altrichter’s energy and sense of musical drama. Together they comprise a powerful portfolio of Petr’s finest work with the orchestra of which he was Principal Conductor from 1997 – 2001.
