Heritage & Legacy is a new concept from RLPO Live - seeking to set some of the great well-known masterpieces of the British musical tradition in the context of their lesser-known (and in many cases never before recorded) forebears and followers.
Douglas Bostock’s first RLPO Live album, with programme research by Lewis Foreman, illustrates the emergence of Elgar and Vaughan Williams - who sparked a renewal so complete that the music of their predecessors, equally revered in its day, has been unfairly eclipsed ever since.
Elgar’s Enigma Variations – recorded by the RLPO for the first time – and Vaughan Williams’ much-loved Tallis Fantasia are contrasted with three shorter works, illustrating the fine Victorian tradition they inherited, and the later music they inspired.
A Liverpool connection begins the album: Frederic Austin, whose early years were spent in the city, composed his Sea Venturers Overture in 1934.
